Test scene: Ultra Boy

Monstress stepped into the kitchen, wrapped in a purple silk robe with a floral pattern. Her usually-immaculate hair was slightly mussed; she hadn't yet gone through her usual morning beauty routine.

She yawned, stretched slightly, and moved towards the cooler. They had an autochef, of course, but she was more interested in preparing her own breakfast this morning.

Still clutching his head, Jo nodded weakly and responded.

"I think so, though I have a nasty headache. Learned a couple of things, though. Namely, that I do have X-ray vision and second my brain can't process all of that new and highly unusual information. Not yet, at least. Maybe practice would help."

"Let's give you a minute," she suggested. "Catch your breath, and when you're ready, go ahead and take a swing at me. We'll try the x-ray vision again once your head is clear."

Taking a couple of minutes to recover, Jo stood up, still slightly unsteady. He turned to face Candi and smiled gratefully.

"Thanks. Let's put that off for a bit. If I can switch to something else fast enough, I might be able to-" shaking his head, Jo returned his focus to the current test of super strength. "But that is for later."

Moving within striking range of Candi, Jo switched to super strength. Having no idea what the upper limits of this power was, he swung his fist towards her jaw at what he guessed to be half strength.

She easily rolled with it, not even taking a step backward. She turned back to face him.

"What was that about baby steps, dear? Come on. Give me your best punch."

He had forgotten about that. Jo chuckled ruefully at his blunder.

Giving an exaggerated bow, "My sincerest apologies my lady, I shall endeavor to keep that in mind from this point forward."

Pushing the thoughts of combos from his mind with great effort, he swung for Candi's jaw, this time at full power.

She flew backward, landing solidly on the ground with a tremendous crash.

She picked herself up off the ground, shaking her head to clear it.

"Not bad! Not bad at all!"

Jo barely registered what Candi said, staring intently at his fist having not moved since the follow through to the punch. A multitude of scenarios flew through his mind too fast for him to get a decent grasp on. The ones he could catch however, had some interesting possibilities.

"Huh- are you alright?" He also noticed that his hand didn't really hurt from that, though he certainly felt it. This lead to yet more scenarios flitting in his mind. Jo ignored them for right now.

"Oh, don't worry about me, sweetie. I can take it." She stepped forward and prepped herself. "How about trying a throw?"

Violently wrestling a thought into a position that he could properly understand it, Jo had an idea form in his head and decided to try it out.

"Actually, I want to try something that's been bouncing around my head for the past few seconds."

Seeing that she had prepped herself, he switched to super speed and sped towards Candi. At the last possible moment, which Jo absently noticed took longer than it should have, he punched at Candi's stomach and switched to invulnerability mid-swing.

The fist hit rapidly, faster than anything, and it was tough as steel as it connected. His fist ricocheted off her abdomen, bouncing off harmlessly.

"It tickles!" Candi chuckled.

Recovering from his own attack, Jo snorted at Cadni's reaction. If nothing else, he made his new friend laugh. This thought caused him to smile.

Jo hopped back a bit. "While that wasn't quite the effect I intended, still good to know. 'Use super speed then invulnerability to tickle Candi' is something to remember."

"Mind if I try that again, this time switching to super strength?"

"Jo, I haven't found anything yet that can seriously hurt me. Go ahead." She steeled herself for the attack.

'...Mmmm. We might want to find out under controlledish conditions rather than find out on the field. But that is for later.' Jo thought with a frown, concerned about that unknown and the potential consequences. Then he smirked "Challenge accepted!"

He went half way across the gym, switched to super speed and dashed towards Candi. Once again aiming for her stomach, he waited until the last possible moment, this time actively noticing and making a note of how long that seemed to take, before switching to super strength.

She arced gracefully through the air, before hitting the distant wall on the opposite side of the gym with a loud clang. She collapsed to the floor in a heap, leaving a thick dent in the wall.

As she slowly got her way to her hands and knees, she began to tremble.

"Oh grife!" Seeing the admittedly impressive results of his blow, Jo gets concerned and switches to super speed to reach Candi.

"Are...are you alright?"

But the shaking gives way to laughter. She falls over and rolls onto her back, still giggling, unable to form a cohesive sentence.

Relief washed over Jo as he watched his new friend laughing on the ground. 'Apparently she's fine.' He thought grinning. Glancing at the wall, he shuddered to think about doing that to civilians. Pushing that thought from his head, Jo joined in with the laughter, glad she was fine.

After a few moments had passed, Jo asked "You okay?"

"Oh, definitely. I may have left an imprint on the wall, though." She got to her feet, still chuckling.

"Clever thought, swapping powers like that for effect."

Looking at the wall, Jo couldn't help another chuckle.

"Thanks! I can't remember why I thought of it, but I was hoping it would work. And I noticed something while I was using the super speed. I think I was able to process everything faster in order to keep up with my body. Perhaps that can help process the information I get using the x-ray vision?"

Jo was lost in thought about this possibility, and simply stood there absently, rather than put plan into action.

"Except if you've got super speed on, can you use X-Ray vision?" she prompted.

Absently waving that aside, Jo responded "It doesn't seem so. It seems only one power can be active at a time, but I was thinking of activating x-ray and switching to super speed immediately afterwards to help process the information. Ideally, I won't need to do this forever, but it might be helpful for the first few times. Probably still hurt, though."

Bracing himself, he was about to activate X-Ray vision when he realized where he was looking. Flushing a bit, Jo turned back to where the target had been and activated the vision for a moment and switched to super speed.

Jo stumbled a bit, but stayed upright, once again clutching his head.

"Did that help?" she asked gently. She noticed he had looked away before turning on his x-ray vision; she wasn't going to bring it up and embarrass him, though.

Shaking his head, Jo righted himself and muttered, "Huh. I wondered why I hadn't seen a pool in here."

Turning to Candi, "Yeah, that helped. I think switching to super speed allowed me to process the information better at least before the pain became overwhelming... Sorry, I don't think I am explaining this well. I'm not sure how to explain this properly, but it seems to have helped."

Pausing for a moment as a thought came to him, Jo continued "Or I could simply be adjusting to the power and will eventually be able to use it with feeling pain. Either way works for me."

"Let's hope it's the latter." She smiled gently at him. "Let's see... super-speed, super toughness, x-ray vision, super speed..." She grinned widely as the thought came to her. "That's right! Flight!"

Completely forgetting about the potential reasons for the X-Ray vision hurting less, and the potential uses for it both moral and immoral, Jo perked up at the possibility of flight.

He flipped the mental switch for flight and jumped up excitedly.

And promptly bounced off the ceiling.
